(Honoka'a, HI)
What are some natural home remedies for sciatica? Thanks!
Michelle says: Here are some natural remedies that may help with sciatica.
However, before you try any of these natural remedies, I think it would be a great idea for you to consult with your medical doctor. Your doctor can help you to figure out the cause of your condition - there are several things that can cause sciatica. Knowing the cause will help you determine the best course of action to take.
Things to Avoid:Avoid participating in any activities that make the pain worse.
Avoid sitting on cold chairs and surfaces as this can cause more irritation to your sciatic nerve.
Avoid sitting in the same position for long periods of time.
Try to get rest as often as you can.
Diet:Increase your intake of raw food to provide you with much needed vitamins and minerals.
Focus on a whole foods, plant-based diet as this will help provide your body with the nourishment it needs for healing.
Herbal Remedies:Dong quai – is helpful for relieving the pain of sciatica.
Willow bark – contains natural pain relieving properties. Willow bark should not be used on a long term basis because it can irritate your stomach over time.
Cayenne – you may get some relief by applying a cayenne salve/ointment over the affected area.
Here is a simple recipe for a
basic cayenne salve: Heat up 2 tbsp of virgin coconut oil until hot. Remove from heat and stir in 1 tbsp cayenne powder. Allow to cool. Apply to affected area as needed. Gently massage until oil is absorbed. Use a paper towel to wipe away any excess. Be sure to wash your hands thoroughly after handling this mixture. You DON’T want to get it into your eyes!
Nutritional Supplements:Vitamin B Complex – vitamin B complex is very important for nerve repair and to maintain healthy nerves.
Calcium – your body needs enough calcium to maintain a strong musculoskeletal system.
Magnesium – works with calcium.
Other Remedies:Give yourself plenty of time to rest when you need to.
Get some fresh air on a daily basis.
Try to do some gentle exercises such as walking or swimming every day, preferably outside in the sunlight.
Stay hydrated. It helps to improve your circulation and reduce pain.
Hydrotherapy:Applying a hot pack (e.g. a hot water bottle, or heating pad) to your affected leg may help to ease any pain and inflammation. Repeat up to 3 times a day. If you can, have someone gently massage your leg once you've removed the heat. This will help to increase your circulation.
For pain in your lower back, try a cold pack for 15 – 20 minutes.
Hope that helps!
