Are There Any Natural Remedies for Sciatica?

(Honoka'a, HI)

What are some natural home remedies for sciatica? Thanks!

Michelle says: Here are some natural remedies that may help with sciatica.

However, before you try any of these natural remedies, I think it would be a great idea for you to consult with your medical doctor. Your doctor can help you to figure out the cause of your condition - there are several things that can cause sciatica. Knowing the cause will help you determine the best course of action to take.

Things to Avoid:

Avoid participating in any activities that make the pain worse.

Avoid sitting on cold chairs and surfaces as this can cause more irritation to your sciatic nerve.

Avoid sitting in the same position for long periods of time.

Try to get rest as often as you can.

Diet:
Increase your intake of raw food to provide you with much needed vitamins and minerals.

Focus on a whole foods, plant-based diet as this will help provide your body with the nourishment it needs for healing.

Herbal Remedies:

Dong quai – is helpful for relieving the pain of sciatica.

Willow bark – contains natural pain relieving properties. Willow bark should not be used on a long term basis because it can irritate your stomach over time.

Cayenne – you may get some relief by applying a cayenne salve/ointment over the affected area.

Here is a simple recipe for a basic cayenne salve: Heat up 2 tbsp of virgin coconut oil until hot. Remove from heat and stir in 1 tbsp cayenne powder. Allow to cool. Apply to affected area as needed. Gently massage until oil is absorbed. Use a paper towel to wipe away any excess. Be sure to wash your hands thoroughly after handling this mixture. You DON’T want to get it into your eyes!

Nutritional Supplements:

Vitamin B Complex – vitamin B complex is very important for nerve repair and to maintain healthy nerves.

Calcium – your body needs enough calcium to maintain a strong musculoskeletal system.

Magnesium – works with calcium.

Other Remedies:

Give yourself plenty of time to rest when you need to.

Get some fresh air on a daily basis.

Try to do some gentle exercises such as walking or swimming every day, preferably outside in the sunlight.

Stay hydrated. It helps to improve your circulation and reduce pain.

Hydrotherapy:

Applying a hot pack (e.g. a hot water bottle, or heating pad) to your affected leg may help to ease any pain and inflammation. Repeat up to 3 times a day. If you can, have someone gently massage your leg once you've removed the heat. This will help to increase your circulation.

For pain in your lower back, try a cold pack for 15 – 20 minutes.

Hope that helps!

Michelle

My Experience With Sciatica
by: Ivy

Six years ago I had a horrendous attack of sciatica. Words cannot describe the horrendous pain - particularly at night, the spasms would go right down my leg to my big toe. I would hold my leg up in the air and literally scream with the pain.

I was taken to hospital and all they did was give me drugs, Tramadol, voltaren, etc. etc. In desperation, I took them for a week, then decided that I was not going down this path.

I could hardly walk, the pain was so intense, I ended up with what is called foot drop. My foot literally flapped as I walked. I sought treatment from a chiropractor which helped a little - 11 months later, it had cost me $3,000.

I knew that there had to be an answer out there somewhere so I searched the internet for answers. I tried the exercises, some helped a little, others made it worse.

My great grand daughter's first birthday party was coming up and I told the family that I could not attend. Then...

...one day I found this web site by Dr Jolie Bookspan called "Fix Your Own Pain Without Drugs or Surgery."

I swear to you that 3 days later I was free of pain! I attended the birthday party. I can tell you that I sat in a chair the whole time terrified to move in case the pain came back. It didn't.

So began my journey to good health. I wrote an e-mail to Dr Jolie and she took the time out to write back. This kind lady is my mentor. She has taught me so much. A lot of her posts are on the Healthline web site - some of the stories are about me. We have become friends.

I was already a vegetarian, however, after reading her books, I made the decision to become a Vegan something of which I have never regretted.

I still get the odd sciatica attack, however, I am now able to control it with stretches. I always ask myself "what have I done to bring this on - have I bent over, or sat incorrectly?" The odd occasion, particularly if I am tired, I have to make a conscious effort to lift my foot. I NEVER take pain killers.

I live in a retirement village and over the years I have helped some of the residents with their pain by using Dr Jolie's methods.

Kindest regards,

Ivy
