Avoiding Sunburn

Hi,

I heard that you are more likely to be sunburned if you are lacking some vitamin or nutrient, but I can't remember which one exactly. Is this true? Can you please tell me more about this?

Thanks!

Michelle says:

Yes it is true that you can be more likely to get sunburned if you are vitamin and nutrient deficient. If you eat a Standard American Diet (SAD) that is high in fat and low in fruits, veggies, and whole grains, you will burn more easily.

The very best way to get natural sun protection from the inside out is from the whole food you eat. Eat plenty of fresh fruits, fresh vegetables, and whole grains (the more variety the better).

A whole foods diet will give you a full range of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and other nutrients your body needs to protect itself from the sun. It will also help your body get more benefits from exposure to the sun. Here's a link to a page I've written on the benefits of sunlight...

Specific vitamins and nutrients you need for sun protection are vitamin A, beta carotene, vitamin C, vitamin E, and essential fatty acids. Antioxidants are also important because they help prevent your skin from burning too quickly.

Hope that helps and enjoy your time in the sun!

Michelle
