If everyone knew about the many health benefits of coconut water, I'm sure we'd end up with a coconut shortage.
It's not by accident that the people in some cultures call the coconut palm the "tree of life." Coconuts and coconut water are health promoting in so many different ways.
Coconut water is so wonderfully refreshing and good for you. Here are some of the benefits of coconut water:

One of the amazing things about coconut water is that it's got a very similar electrolyte balance to our own blood. It is also identical to human blood plasma.
Because of these properties, medical practitioners in some parts of the world regularly use it as an intravenous (IV) fluid when regular IV's are not available.
Coconut water can also be used as a blood plasma transfusion.
Fortunately coconut water is naturally sterile, so it doesn't pose any safety issues.
Coconut water hydrates, nourishes, and refreshes you. It's one of the best beverages you could ever drink.
One of the best benefits of coconut water is that it beats dehydration quickly and effectively.
So, forget about vitamin waters, energy drinks, and sports drinks. Coconut water is way better for you. It's completely natural, full of vitamins and minerals, and it's got a good balance of electrolytes.
Coconut water is lower in calories and contains less sodium than regular sports drinks - Another evidence that food in its natural state is far superior to any human invention.
So, where to get coconut water?
If you're fortunate enough to live in a nice warm climate where coconuts grow, the best place to get coconut water is straight from the young, green coconuts. Of course you may need to find someone brave enough to climb the coconut tree for you if you can't do it yourself. :-)
For everyone else, you may be able to find fresh green coconuts in your local market or grocery store. Some stores leave the green husk on and others remove it for you. In that case, the coconut will be white. If you're not sure, just ask.
Although you can get a small amount of coconut water from "dried" coconuts (the ones with the fibrous brown husk), the young coconuts are much better. You get a lot more water from young coconuts. Young coconut water is sweeter too. Yum!
The best young coconuts are heavy for their size. Try to go to a store that has a high turnover rate so that you'll be getting the freshest coconuts possible.
If cracking open a coconut sounds like too much work (it can be tough if you're just learning how) you can also find coconut water in tetra packs. You may be able to find it in your local grocery store or health food store. Or you can buy it online. Look for brands that are not loaded with preservatives or sugar. You'll pay more, but it's worth it.
Two really good brands are Vita Coco and O.N.E.

The flavor of coconuts and coconut water can vary from region to region. So experiment with different brands until you find what you like. Enjoy!
