1. Check with your doctor first before starting any vigorous exercise program if any of the following apply to you:

  • You have a history of high blood pressure, heart trouble, diabetes, or any other medical issues
  • You are over 30 and have not been exercising at all
  • You have not had a medical checkup in the last 12 months
  • You are overweight

2. If you do not have any health issues but have not been working out regularly, start out slowly.

Don't try to go from being a couch potato one day to a 40k marathon runner the next! Be realistic. Allow yourself to progress gradually.

Learn the right techniques for each activity you have chosen to participate in. Pay attention to all of these tips and take good care of yourself. After all, you want to enjoy being active long term.

3. Avoid participating in strenuous exercise for at least an hour or two after eating.

Vigorous exercise right after eating will shunt the blood away from your digestive organs. This could leave you with painful cramps.

Light exercise such as walking is okay because it does not pull blood away from your organs and actually increases your intake of oxygen which will help your food to digest.

4. Be aware of unusual symptoms.

If you notice any unusual symptoms while exercising such as an unusual shortness of breath, weakness, heart irregularities, etc., stop and see your medical doctor right away.

5. Stay hydrated.

Drink lots of water before, during, and after exercise to replace lost fluids.

6. Before starting your exercise do some gentle stretching.

Stretching properly allows your body to warm up. It helps to prevent injuries and muscle soreness. It will also help to improve your flexibility.

It's a great idea to always end your exercise period with some stretching as well.

7. Try to get at least 30 minutes of exercise each day.

Try to alternate aerobic exercise with some strength training and stretching for a full body workout.

8. Make physical activity a part of your regular routine.

Choose activities you enjoy. That way you will be more likely to make exercising a permanent part of your lifestyle.
