Hot Foot Bath

The hot foot bath is a very soothing and relaxing form of water therapy (hydrotherapy).

Soaking your feet in very warm water helps to get rid of any congestion in your brain and internal organs. It also helps to boost your immune system by increasing the activity of your white blood cells.

Try this remedy the next time you've got a congestive headache. It can help to relieve the pain and pressure.

You can also use this remedy for menstrual cramps, to ease a cold or flu, to warm yourself up, or to help you relax before bedtime.

CAUTION:
Do NOT use this remedy if you are not able to feel anything in your legs and feet. If you have frostbite, diabetes, or any other disease or disorder that causes you to have poor circulation in your legs and feet, do not use a hot foot bath.

What You Will Need:

  • A tub, bucket, or basin large enough to cover your feet and legs. Ideally, the water should reach the area just below your knees
  • Large sheet and blanket
  • Large plastic sheet to cover the floor (if you're not able to do this in the bathroom)
  • Large pitcher or container to dip out water
  • Thermometer

Step 1: Spread the plastic on the floor and place the basin on top of it.

Step 2: Heat water to approximately 103 degrees Fahrenheit (about 40 degrees Celsius). Use the thermometer to make sure it's the right temperature. If you don't have a thermometer, use your elbow to make sure the water is hot enough. Do NOT use water that is hot enough to burn you.

Step 3: Pour the water into the tub, bucket, or basin. Fill it only two-thirds of the way.

Step 4: Wrap yourself in the sheet and blanket and then sit on the chair/stool. Carefully put your feet into the basin. Use the bottom of the sheet and blanket to drape over the basin. That will help to keep the heat in.

Step 5: Add more hot water from time to time. Before you add more water, be sure to take your feet out first! You may need to have someone nearby to help you do this. Enjoy your hot foot bath for 10 - 30 minutes.

Step 6: Once your time is up, remove your feet from the water. Dry them thoroughly and then cover them up with some warm socks. Relax for a few minutes (or more). Do not allow yourself to become chilled.

NOTE: If you've got a congestive headache, or if you start to feel too hot, try placing a cold, wet face towel on the top of your head and the back of your neck while you soak your feet in the hot water.
