GM (Genetically Modified) Foods

Is GM meat in any way unhealthy to humans?

Michelle says: Great question Shasta. In my opinion, GM (genetically modified) meat is not a healthy choice. Here are my reasons...

Jack A. Heinemann, a professor of genetics and molecular biology found in his research that "GM plant material can transfer to animals exposed to GM feed in their diets or environment, and that there can be a residual difference in animals or animal-products as a result of exposure to GM feed."

If the DNA from GM crops can end up in the genes of animals who eat them, who's to say that your genes won't be affected as well when you eat the meat of those animals?

At this point in time, there haven't been very many studies on the safety of GM foods. And there certainly have not been a lot of long terms studies done.

What we do know so far from the research (mostly animal studies) is pretty scary. Damaged organs, disrupted fertility, and toxicity are just a few of the many unwanted side effects that come from eating GM crops.

Some of the damage may be irreversible, so why take the risk? It's better to avoid all GM meat and foods altogether.

The safety of GM foods is a HUGE issue and my answer doesn't even begin to scratch the surface....

But, you can learn a lot more about the dangers and health risks of eating GM foods in the book Genetic Roulette: The Documented Health Risks of Genetically Engineered Foods by Jeffrey M. Smith.

Hope that helps, and please spread the word about GM foods with your friends and family.

Michelle
