Natural Remedies for Heavy Metal Poisoning

Heavy metal poisoning is becoming more and more of a problem in our modern day society.

Think about all the different products and items you use in the course of just one week. Or even just one day. How many of them contain heavy metals?

You may be surprised to learn that many of the products you use regularly contain heavy metals.

These metals can cause serious health problems when your body absorbs them.

Here's a list of just some of the places or products where you'll find them:

  • The air you breathe (especially city air and air near busy highways)
  • Drinking water
  • Dental fillings
  • Shellfish
  • Organ meats
  • Insecticides
  • Pesticides
  • Dyes
  • Paint

Aluminum, arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury are some of the most abundant toxic metals.

Metal toxicity usually builds up slowly over time. For that reason, you may not notice any symptoms for a very long time.

Symptoms of heavy metal poisoning are pretty vague. A lot of the symptoms are the same ones you would see in other common illnesses, so a proper diagnosis can be a bit of a challenge for your doctor.

Symptoms of heavy metal poisoning can include:
  • Anemia
  • Fatigue or chronic exhaustion
  • Upset stomach
  • Colic
  • Headaches
If your central nervous system is affected, you may also get the following symptoms:
  • Dizziness
  • Insomnia
  • Tremors
  • Numbness
  • Lack of coordination
  • Problems with concentration

Prevention

It is impossible to eliminate all exposure to heavy metals because they are everywhere. However, you should try to take whatever steps as you can to reduce your overall exposure. Here are some tips to help you reduce your exposure to heavy metals:

  • Wear protective gear. Do you work in an environment where you are exposed to toxic metals? Be sure to wear protective gear each and every time you are exposed.

  • Read labels carefully. Reading labels will help you avoid products that contain toxic metals. Not sure? Look it up!

  • Follow the 8 rules for healthy living. They will help your body heal, cleanse, and recover from illness.

The Remedies:

Diet and Nutrition

If you’re experiencing heavy metal poisoning, it is very important to pay attention to your diet and nutritional status.

If you are missing key nutrients, your liver will not be able to do its job properly. Your liver helps to detoxify and cleanse your body.

Try these dietary changes:

Limit your intake of processed foods and refined foods - Refined and processed foods are a major source of metal poisoning.

Avoid canned foods - Canned foods can contain metals, especially if the cans have been damaged in some way. Bottled foods are a safer choice.

Eat your essential fatty acids - Essential fatty acids such as flaxseed oil help to lessen the effect of metal poisoning on your brain.

Eat foods high in vitamin C - Vitamin C rich foods (citrus fruit, dark leafy greens, etc) help to leach out toxic metals from your body.

Eat foods high in selenium - Selenium also helps to leach toxic metals from your body. Brazil nuts are a great source of selenium.

Eat foods high in Vitamin E – Vitamin E is a natural antioxidant which helps to combat toxicity in your body.

Wheat grass and barley grass - Both help your body to heal and detoxify naturally.

Herbal Remedies for Heavy Metal Poisoning

Herbs can help to cleanse your body from the buildup of toxins and pollutants. Here are some herbs that are helpful for blood cleansing from toxic metals.

Garlic – Garlic contains sulfur which helps to remove toxic metals from the body.

Dandelion root – helps your liver function normally. When your liver is healthy it will be better able to remove toxins from your blood.

Burdock – Burdock is an excellent blood cleanser. It also helps to enhance the action of dandelion root.

Yellow dock – helps to purify the blood and enhance the action of dandelion root.

Kelp – reduces absorption of radioactive materials and heavy metals.

Alfalfa – helps prevent absorption of radioactive materials and heavy metals.

Cilantro – cilantro helps remove mercury from your brain and body.

One of my favorite places to buy organic herbs online is Mountain Rose Herbs.

Lifestyle Changes

Use a water filter - A good quality water filter will help to remove chlorine and heavy metals. Wash your fruits and vegetables with filtered water to avoid any heavy metal residues.

Go organic! – Buy organically grown produce when you can, or better yet, grow your own produce.

Do not use cookware from aluminum or copper - When you use aluminum and copper cookware, the metals can leach into your food quite easily.

Other Considerations for Heavy Metal Poisoning

Recycle. Instead of throwing away your electronic devices once you’re finished with them, recycle them. Some big box electronic stores collect old devices such as cell phones, computers, mp3 players, etc. Some communities have a recycling depot where you can bring old items. Not sure where to go? Check the directory listing for your local municipality.

Think before you buy. Is it something you really need or that you will really use? Can you achieve the same results with something you already have? You may have noticed that there is a lot of overlap between products. If your cell phone has a built in mp3 player, do you really need a separate player?
