Is It Okay To Mix Oils?

Is it OK to mix olive oil and flax seed oil together to take with food or juice? And how much oil to be taken in a day?

Michelle says: Good question! Yes, it's perfectly okay to mix different oils together.

As for how much oil you should take in a day, that really depends on your diet...

Do you eat a lot of whole foods that naturally have a high fat content (e.g., olives, nuts, seeds, avocados, coconuts)?

If your answer is "yes," then you really don't need to add any extra oils to your diet on a daily basis.

Use oils on an as needed basis to enhance the flavor of a dish (e.g., to make a salad dressing), or in a dish that requires oil for baking or cooking.

It really is better to get your oils directly from the whole foods you eat.

If you do not eat a lot of foods with a natural fat content (such as the ones I mentioned above), then you can safely add more oils to your daily diet. Anywhere from 1 - 2 tablespoons per day should be sufficient.

Don't forget to always pick healthy unrefined oils (e.g., virgin coconut oil, extra virgin olive oil, etc.) over unhealthy and refined oils.

I found your comment re having extra oil eg. olive oil, interesting. I do eat ground flax seed, walnuts, almonds and brazil nuts and the occasional avocado. Since I had the problem re reflux, extra oil such as olive oil or similar seems to upset my stomach. I have often wondered if I am having enough oil so your post has set my mind at rest.

As I have got older, the skin on my legs have got quite dry. Body moisturizers have not solved the problem. Guess what? I am now using organic extra virgin olive oil and the problem has gone away.
