It's easy to make coconut milk. Homemade coconut milk tastes so much better than the stuff in the can.

it does take more time and effort, but the difference in taste is well worth it.

Here's what you'll need to make coconut milk:

1 mature coconut in the shell
pure water

  1. Hold the coconut securely in one hand. Give the coconut a few strong blows along the center of the coconut. Do this over a large bowl or sink so that you can catch the water inside the coconut. Break any large pieces into smaller pieces. It will make getting the meat out a lot easier.
  2. Use a knife to carefully pry out the coconut meat. A table knife works well enough.
  3. Taste a tiny piece of the meat to see if it tastes alright. If it does, break or cut the coconut meat into smaller pieces.
  4. Blend the coconut pieces in batches with water until the coconut is well blended and the liquid resembles milk. You will need about 2 cups of water to blend 1 cup of coconut pieces.
  5. Use a large strainer or cheese cloth to strain the milk. Use a large spoon to press out as much of the pulp as you can. If you'd like, you can hand-squeeze the pulp instead. Throw out the pulp or save it to use in other dishes.
  6. Strain the milk once more to remove any coconut particles that may have escaped. Pour it into a storage container. It's now ready for use in your favorite dishes.

Another Way To Make Coconut Milk

If you're in a rush for time, you can quickly make coconut milk using unsweetened desiccated coconut. Here's how:

Blend 1 cup of desiccated coconut with 1/5 cups of hot water for a minute or two until it's well blended. Strain. Discard the pulp. Pour the milk into a jug or storage container.

For the best quality milk, only use desiccated coconut that doesn't have any preservatives or sulfites in it. One brand that I really like is Let's Do Organic Shredded, Unsweetened Coconut. It's free of sulfites and preservatives and tastes great.

How To Store Coconut Milk

Store your coconut milk in an airtight container in the fridge. It lasts about 3 days before you'll have to throw it out.

If you have more than you'll be able to use in a few days, coconut milk freezes well so that's a great option.
