Mercury and Mercury Poisoning

Why worry about mercury poisoning? Mercury is a toxic heavy metal that occurs naturally in our environment.

Thanks to industry and the unfortunate use of this metal in dentistry, we are exposed to more mercury than ever before.

Exposure to mercury comes from many different sources. We get it in the air we breathe and the water we drink. It is used in some commercial products and industrial processes.

You can also find mercury in some fish (e.g., tuna, bass, and others), some batteries, some paints, and from “silver” dental fillings (aka amalgams) which actually contain more mercury than silver.

Dental fillings can be made up of anywhere from 50 to 70 % mercury. Mercury fillings is a more accurate term for these fillings.

If you’ve got mercury fillings, you are getting a constant dose of mercury vapor. Every time you drink a hot drink, brush your teeth, or chew food or gum, your fillings release toxic mercury vapor.

Here is an interesting video that shows how mercury vapor is easily released from your dental fillings:

Smoking Teeth = Poison Gas

You may not notice any negative changes to your health right away because of your mercury fillings. But truth is, mercury IS toxic. It is more poisonous than lead and arsenic. What happens over time when you are exposed to the toxic vapor every single day? Mercury poisoning is definitely a concern for all of us.

Possible health effects:

Mercury vapor can cause so many different problems that it may be very hard for your doctor to diagnose it. It can affect you in one way and someone else in a completely different way. A lot of the time, the symptoms look like the symptoms you would see in other common illnesses.

Here are just a few of the symptoms you can get if you are exposed to mercury:

headaches, depression, fatigue, high blood pressure, memory loss, vomiting, diarrhea, shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle tremors, nerve damage, anxiety, death

Here is another interesting video segment about dental amalgam that aired on 60 Minutes back in 1990:
