Natural Help For Bipolar Disorder
Has bipolar ever been treated with natural remedies, and what is its effectiveness?
Michelle says: I believe there are natural remedies for every condition and illness out there. Some of them are well known, and others aren't so well known.
Unfortunately, there hasn't been a lot of talk about natural remedies for bipolar disorder. At this point in time, we don't know a lot about the effectiveness of the natural remedies that do exist. There hasn't been a lot of scientific research on natural remedies in general.
Much of the information that exists out there in regards to natural remedies for bipolar disorder is anecdotal evidence. Some may disagree, but in my opinion, anecdotal evidence is valid in its own right.
Not surprisingly, from the anecdotal evidence, it seems that nutrition plays a huge role in normalizing the mood. We have known for a long time that what you eat does have an effect on how you feel. Being low in certain nutrients can also have a negative effect on your mood and sense of well-being. The mind and body are more closely linked than most people realize.
It does make perfect sense for anyone with bipolar disorder to make sure that they are getting enough nutrients on a daily basis.
Here are some things that may help a person with bipolar disorder:
Please keep in mind that if you are taking any medications, it is really important that you discuss any diet and lifestyle changes you'd like to make with your doctor first.
Foods to Avoid:Junk foods
Processed foods
Refined sugars
Any foods you are sensitive or allergic to
Alcohol
Caffeine
Artificial flavorings and colorings
Preservatives
Other food additives such as monosodium glutamate and aspartame
Diet:Eat a nourishing plant-based whole foods diet. That means, eating plenty of fresh raw fruits and veggies along with a variety of whole grains. Beans, legumes, and raw nuts and seeds are very important too.
A raw food diet may be helpful as well. There's a video posted on YouTube where one young woman reports stable moods after eliminating junk foods in favor of a raw food diet. Here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dzeZoqbSNJg
Supplements:Omega 3 fatty acids - help your brain to function correctly and also promotes a healthy nervous system.
Vitamin B complex - you need vitamin B complex for normal brain functioning and healthy nerves. It also helps you cope with stress.
Lifestyle changes:Exercise - helps to elevate and normalize moods
Water - helps to flush and eliminate toxins from your body. It also helps to alleviate feelings of depression.
Fresh air - also leaves you with a sense of well-being and lifts and balances your mood - especially if you get out into nature where you can see God's beautiful creation at the same time.
Hope that helps!
