Natural Remedies For Cystic Acne

I just started within the last year, to eat more organic, whole foods. At the same time ridding my house of toxic chemicals and using natural remedies when needed.

My constant bane since I was in my teens is cystic acne. Is there something, along with my recent diet changes, that would help this?

I had read somewhere that activated charcoal could be effective. As well as a mixture of honey and cinnamon rubbed on the face, left overnight and washed in the morning. Any suggestions?

Michelle says: Hopefully you'll be able to find a solution that works for your cystic acne soon.

Have you noticed any difference at all in your skin after you made the changes in your diet?

Here are some more things you can try:

Pay attention to any foods that may be causing a flare up. Some people find that their skin breaks out more when they eat wheat products. If you think this may be happening for you, you can test it by cutting all wheat from your diet for a couple of weeks to see if your skin clears up.

If wheat is not the problem, some other possible foods may be soy or dairy products.

Maybe you can try keeping a food journal where you record everything you eat as well as the condition of your skin. That should help you be able to identify any problem causing foods.

Aside from that, you can increase the amount of raw green vegetables that you eat. They tend to promote a clearer complexion.

Increase your water intake. Drinking lots of water helps to flush out any impurities and keeps your system clean. Learn more about water on this page: http://www.natural-health-restored.com/benefits-of-water.html

Try adding freshly squeezed lemon to your water helps with the cleansing process too.

Other great acne fighting foods to add to your diet are:
-fresh vegetable juice (a combination of carrot, beets, celery, cucumber, and spinach is great)
-carrots
-beets
-virgin coconut oil
-flax seeds and flax seed oil
-lots of raw foods
-brown rice
-sunflower seeds
-pumpkin seeds

You can take activated charcoal internally to help cleanse your system. I don't recommend using it as a facial mask though because washing it off completely can be very difficult and time consuming.

Honey is great too. Adding cinnamon adds extra antiseptic properties. I'm not sure about leaving honey on overnight over your entire face. That would be pretty messy. It would be better to do a spot treatment, I think.

You should get good results from using honey (and cinnamon) instead of a regular facial wash. It gets your face clean without stripping it of all the oils. I use honey as a cleanser sometimes and it leaves my skin feeling very soft.

Another effective natural remedy for acne is bentonite clay. Use a bentonite clay mask a couple of times a week. It helps to cleanse and soothe the skin. Many people have had success with it. You can use it internally as well. Here's a website where you can learn more about clay and how to use it: http://aboutclay.com/clay_info.htm

Hope that helps!

Thanks For Your Reply
by: K.F.

Thank you so much for your reply.

I very recently made the dietary changes (avoiding dairy, up raw veg intake, avoiding sugar) so it really hasn't had time to make a huge difference.

HOWEVER, after reading on your site, in several different places, and also in the comments, about honey and cinnamon, I did do that. Have done it for 2 nights and am totally amazed at how effective it was!!!!!!

Mainly my chin and upper lip are affected, so it wasn't TOO bad sleeping with it on all night. Plus I sleep on my back so that was fine. Even if I didn't sleep on my back, or had to use it all over my face, I feel it would be WELL worth it for the results!

I have started doing some of what you suggested, i.e., nuts, virgin coconut oil(in cooking, baking and smoothies). I am a big water drinker, but have been doing less of that in the winter and more of the organic green teas. Does that count for water intake?

I shall start incorporating carrots/beets and veg juices.

Thanks so much again for your help and quick response.

You're Welcome
by: Anonymous

Hi K.F.

You're very welcome. I'm very happy to hear that you're starting to see some great results with the honey! Yay!!! :-)

Since your dietary changes were very recent, I must forewarn you that it's pretty common for things to get a little worse before they get better. It all depends on how much detoxing your body needs to do.

It's pretty typical to feel a little worse and to have more skin breakouts during the detox phase. Then once that passes, your skin should clear up.

Upping your intake of water should help with that though. And I'm sure the honey will help to minimize it as well.

Now about your question about green tea. It does have some caffeine in it which tends to be dehydrating, so it's not the best substitute for water.

All the best!

It Worked!
by: K.F.

Hi Michelle:

Have to tell you, that honey/cinnamon did the trick! My hubby and I cannot believe how well it has worked. This time last week, not so good! Now,
beautiful!

I am learning more about the clay treatment you suggested. Little nervous about ingesting clay, but am researching it out.

Thanks again for your help!

That's Great News!
by: Michelle

That's awesome news Kathy! I'm so happy and excited for you! :-)

If you're not sure about drinking the bentonite clay, it's okay to skip it. You've already gotten great results with the honey and cinnamon.

For maintenance, you can use bentonite clay externally as a facial mask once or twice a week. It really helps to smooth, soften, and keep your skin clear.

All the best!

Acne Fighting Masks
by: G

I'm past 50 and have dealt with adult acne all my life, it seems. This, although not a cure, definitely keeps it under control:

I wash my face with a little Epsom Salt/warm water mix, apply one of the following masks and finish with Witch Hazel:

1. Yes! Bentonite Clay mask: (mix Bentonite clay with white vinegar) twice a week REALLY reduces redness from infected pimples.

2. Right after Bentonite clay mask: avocado/lemon mask. Avocado to replenish moisture, and lemon to lighten scars. It maintains soft skin and helps with even tone. I can tell the difference if I skip.

3. Alternate Honey mask or Natural Yogurt mask every other week. Honey for inflammation and balancing skin moisture, and Yogurt for inflammation and clearing pores from dead cells/impurities.

I know...it seems like a lot at times, but it takes all this for me to maintain a fairly clear complexion because of the type of acne I struggle with.

Michelle says: Thanks so much G for sharing these great facial masks. I'm sure other readers with problem skin will benefit in a huge way from them. Bentonite clay, lemon, and honey are three of my favorite skin treatments. They work wonders for the skin! Thanks again!
