Nutritional yeast is a form of inactive yeast.

You can use food yeast in many ways: as a nutritional supplement, as a seasoning, or as a condiment.

nutritional yeast

This edible yeast is very high in nutrients.

It has 18 amino acids and is and excellent source of good quality protein.

It is also one of the best food sources of vitamin B complex (with the exception of vitamin B 12).

Some brands are fortified with vitamin B 12. One such brand is Red Star T-6635 Nutritional Yeast.

Another B12 fortified brand that I really like is Bob's Red Mill T6635 Large Flake Yeast

What makes these brands special is that they are grown in a vitamin B 12 rich environment. That makes them a more reliable source of vitamin B12 than other brands on the market.

NOTE: If you are a vegan or are on a strict plant-based diet, then your best strategy for making sure that you get enough vitamin B 12 in your diet is to eat a variety of foods fortified with this vitamin. You may also want to consider taking a vitamin B 12 supplement.

Nutritional yeast also contains folic acid which is needed for healthy red blood cell formation and growth.

It is rich in phosphorus and contains the trace minerals zinc, iron, selenium, and chromium. Chromium helps to your body to metabolize sugar properly. It is especially needed for people who have diabetes or low blood sugar problems (hypoglycemia).

Brewer's yeast looks the same as nutritional yeast. Both forms have a similar nutritional profile as well. The main difference is the taste. Brewer's yeast is a by-product of the beer-brewing industry. It's a little bit bitter and doesn't taste very good.

The nutritional variety of yeast is grown on mineral enriched molasses. It has a savory flavor with a slight hint of cheesiness. Perfect for adding to your vegan pizzas and other dishes that call for that unique flavor.

You can find yeast flakes or powder in well stocked health food stores and some bulk food stores.

This kind of yeast is pretty versatile. You can use it to add even more delicious flavor to your favorite dishes.

Here are some ideas for how you can use it:

  • Sprinkle it on your salad along with your favorite dressing
  • Nutritional yeast is great on popcorn.

  • Use it as a seasoning in soups, savory sauces, and gravies
  • Sprinkle it on your popcorn along with some sea salt and flaxseed oil for a savory treat. Mmmm, it's soooo good!
  • Add it to garlic bread for some extra flavor
  • Add it to savory sandwich spreads
  • Take it as a supplement: Add 1 tablespoon to half a glass of juice and take 2 to 3 times per day
