There are many different symptoms of depression. One person may be affected in a different way from another person.

  • Digestive problems
  • Restlessness
  • Irritability
  • Easily angered
  • Loss of interest or pleasure in hobbies or activities
  • Feelings of worthlessness and inadequacy

Depression symptoms can last for weeks, months, or even years. It can be very debilitating if you don't get help.

There are different categories of clinical depression ranging from dysthymia (low-grade depression) to major depression.

There is also a form of depression known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). A person with SAD feels depressed during the shorter, darker days of fall and winter. Then when spring comes again, those symptoms disappear.

It is very common for people with feeling of depression to think about death and to have thoughts of suicide.

If someone you know is at risk for suicide (e.g., if s/he has suicidal thoughts and a definite intent or a plan to carry out those thoughts) seek immediate medical attention by driving them to the hospital or by calling your local emergency services.
