What To Do With Old Flax Seed Oil?

by Sarinda Wilson
(USA)

It was so expensive.... But it expired. Has been sitting in my mudroom unrefrigerated. How shall I dispose of it? Is it good for plants, fingernails, animals, pedicures or SOMEthing? Thanks!

Michelle says: Great question, Sarinda. Once flaxseed oil is past it's expiry date and has been sitting unrefrigerated for a while, chances are it's rancid and not good for anything.

If you use the oil on your skin, your body can absorb some of it, so it's best not to use it at all for cosmetic purposes.

You can get safely get rid of the oil by taking it in to your local municipal recycling/waste disposal center. You can find out if there's one in your city by looking in your local directory.

If there is no center where you can take it, then just throw it in the garbage (once you've made sure that the cap is closed tightly).

Whatever you do, just don't pour the oil down the sink since it can mess up your drain.

Hope that helps!

Michelle
